The story of Okitipupa local government, nature’s gift to the Ikale community is like the story of its present local government chairman, Dr. Dapo Iwala which has been a harvest of success and achievements.
Last year, he was named, “Ikale icon of the year,” by a cross section of opinion leaders in Ikale community. Dr. Dapo Iwala whose awards have topped over fifty awards was described in one of the award as, “The most determined, visionary and unassuming leader Ikale community has ever had.”
Traversing the formerly ghostly – neglected Okitipupa market into a first class regional market, one finds inundating signs of Dr. Dapo’ achievements. The only impression one gets is that the words of commendation, praise and recognition are not misplaced. A citizen of the council admits that Iwala’ administration is the best thing that has ever happened to Okitipupa council area since its creation.
From the very onset, Dr. Dapo Iwala, made it clear that he would battle poverty and encourage the tapping of the council’s enormous potentials. To achieve this, he targeted only projects and programmes that will directly touch the people and improve the revenue base of the council.
In his first one year in office, about N140 million was spent in the execution of jumbo contracts which has caught him respect from friends and folks.
Now, Ondo State can boast of one of the best regional markets in the country. The Okitipupa regional market which was estimated to have cost the government a whooping sum of two hundred and fifty naira aside the asphalt overlay of the main park and walk ways at commissioning on 3rd of march, 2011 left several persons in awe of exquisite.
Ikale Voice reporters which were at the commissioning of the completed regional market in Okitipupa confirm that aside the electrification of the market, all the lock – up stalls had an installed cylin Fan. The market also celebrates a functional Clinic, Fire Station, Cold Room, Police Station, Administrative office amongst others.

At two years, Okitipupa now celebrates functional boreholes, renovation of markets, construction and renovation of several primary schools building. The success story of the Dr. Dapo lwale led administration include construction of Police station at Igbotako,; construction of basic Health Centre at Ode – Aye,; construction of Basic Health Centre at Igodan – Lisa,; construction of 4 Blocks of 20 units open market stalls at Iju – Odo,; construction of 4 Blocks of 20 units of open market stalls at Ilu – Titun. Also the construction of Health Centre at Okummo,; construction of double bridge along Igbinsin – Oloto road and several others.
The dilapidated council infrastructure such as schools, markets, roads and even the council secretariat had their handful shares of the Dr. Iwala’ policies. The speed at which the effect of renovation in Okitipupa council area is spreading is fast day by day and no council area in the state can afford to be behind if such is to maintain acceptable rate of growth and development.
Speaking with the DLGA of Okitipupa council area, Alhaji S.M. Badmos, told Ikale Voice that the project commissioning which was scattered across the council area on 3rd of March, 2011 are part of the modest achievements of Dr. Dapo Iwala’s led administration.
The Okitipupa regional market, whose project started on 14th of September, 2010 took five months and fifteen days to its completion.
At the commissioning ground, the Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko pointed some of the challenges his administration had faced at a point on the Okitipupa regional project.
Governor Mimiko said, “We thank God that when we started, people thought the completion of this market would take several years. We also had experience of bees driving us out of the site. You are aware of how robbers came to this site. But today, we have a good story. I am excited today because a dream has come true.’’
Despite the challenges posed by bank loans, as market women await re-allocation letters, the Ondo State Governor announced a State Micro Scheme loan which was previously applied for – by the Dr. Dapo Iwala led administration. The loan which was released to various associations in the Okitipupa regional market was well over 10 million naira.
The comprehensive electrification plan of the regional market has given the people of the market a new lease of life. The achievements of Dr. Dapo Iwala, an Ikale indigene from Erinje will definitely be written in gold whenever the history of the Ondo south senatorial district is to be written.
