Cocoa Magnate Calls for Cultural Reawakening

Sharing is caring!

One of the notable Cocoa merchants and grassroot politicians in Ondo State, Hon. (Dr) Olaiya Ayewamide alias “Doxology” had recently called on Nigerians to rededicate themselves into awakening the cultures and traditions of our people.

Dr. Ayewamide, who made this known while speaking with the delegation of Ketewa Cultural Festival Committee that visited him in his Odode Idanre country home stressing that Nigerians should cherish their cultures and traditions so as to ensure they don’t lose the legacies bequeathed unto them by their fore fathers.

The widely traveled politician lamented that he was unhappy that the Whites appreciate our culture and love them to the extent that they spend a lot of their hard earned money to come and watch our cultural events like Mare festival held in Idanre during Governor Mimiko’s administration while we the owners don’t value them much.

He said he was surprised when in California in America, earlier in the year, to hear some of the Americans there narrating how enjoyable the events, especially the mountain climbing aspect was and that they were still looking up to witnessing such in future.

According to him, “to make local festivals like the Ketewa Cultural Festival more interesting, lively and relaxing, some of the old structures and relics of the old times on Oke Idanre Hilltop, where the people were living before they came down when colonialism put end to inter tribal wars and slave raiding expeditions, should be renovated and temporary camps for visitors to relax maximumly from hustle and bustle of normal life for some three or more days.”

He opined that if well managed and packaged with the tourism industry, cultural festivals could generate a lot of revenue for both state governments and the local people as visitors and tourists will patronize the people by buying artifacts, mementoes, local foods and utilize hotels and restaurants.

Many East African countries like Rwanda relies very much on their tourism industry to thrive, hence Nigeria should emulate them he stressed.

He used the opportunity to laud the Ondo State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Yemi Olowolabi, for his untiring and zealous passion to turn around the culture and tourism industries in Ondo State.
